SurfLock™ is a biobased strength aid commercially available to increase fiber to fiber interaction in paper-based applications, such paperboard, tissue, and pulp.

Using SurfLock improves the economics for manufacturers. SurfLock improves the dry strength of the end products across applications that use either virgin fiber or recycled fiber. SurfLock can be used by manufacturers to improve their economics by increasing their use of lower cost virgin fibers, recycled fibers and low-cost fillers, reducing their use of retention aids and improving the runnability of the line with less breaks on the machine.

In tissue applications, SurfLock biopolymers provide increased tensile strength and reduced dusting and linting without negative impacts on softness.

In paperboard applications, SurfLock biopolymers are used to increase burst strength, internal bond strength and compression strength, as measured by industry standard tests such as the short span compression test.

SurfLock biopolymers can be used in place of petroleum-based polymers such as polyacrylamide (PAM), glyoxalated polyacrylamide (GPAM) and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) as well as modified polyamines.

SurfLock offers flexible product application as it can be applied as a liquid dispersion to the thick stock, outlet of the mix/blend chest pump on the long fiber line through an injection nozzle and also offers the capability to add dry powder directly into the pulper.
